Description

Jewish folklore and the Jewish religion have always influenced each other. Often adapted from foreign sources, Jewish folklore was imbued with the Jewish religious spirit but left its mark on Jewish religion. Although many of the religious practices existing in the various Jewish communities have long ago freed themselves from their superstitious and folkloristic beliefs and bear the character of monotheistic Judaism, there still exists side by side with “normative Judaism” a well of popular beliefs, folklore, and superstitions. Contrary to the explicit command of the Torah that forbids such things as soothsaying and divination, beliefs in divination, the prognostic arts, interpretations of dreams, magic, and astrology are still rooted in many Jewish communities and may even be practiced.

Judged by the popularity of horoscopes, fortune telling, dream interpretation, and magic and the ever-growing number of books on these subjects, many people still believe that these disciplines can and do have an impact on their lives. This volume attempts to contribute to one’s understanding of folk Judaism, its beliefs, and practices. It includes chapters on the Jewish calendar and the Jewish signs of the zodiac, the moon and the sun in Jewish folklore, astrology, sorcery and magic, dreams and dream interpretation, superstitions, divination, demonology, the evil eye, and folk remedies for healing. The material presented in this volume is culled from both biblical and rabbinic literature whose works continue to influence Jewish communities throughout the world.
I hope that the readers of this book will have their minds opened to the imaginative and wondrous world of Jewish folklore whose ideas continue to remain widely popular to this day.
